Dutch Colors: Names, Shades and How to Use Them

Dutch color words are adjectives and follow the standard inflection rules. The basic colors are: rood (red), blauw (blue), geel (yellow), groen (green), oranje (orange), paars (purple), roze (pink), bruin (brown), grijs (grey), zwart (black), and wit (white).

When placed before a noun, most colors take an -e ending: de rode auto, het blauwe huis. However, for het-words without an article or with the indefinite article, you write the base form: een blauw huis, blauw huis. This is the same rule that applies to all Dutch adjectives.

Shades and compounds: lichtblauw (light blue), donkergroen (dark green), felrood (bright red), goudgeel (golden yellow). You can also use words like levendig (vivid) or bleek (pale) before the color. Colors are one of the first vocabulary sets beginners master because they appear everywhere in daily Dutch.
