Basic emotions: blij (happy/glad), verdrietig (sad), boos (angry), bang (scared/afraid), verrast (surprised), teleurgesteld (disappointed), trots (proud), jaloers (jealous), verliefd (in love), eenzaam (lonely), opgewonden (excited), nerveus (nervous).
Expressing feelings: Ik voel me… (I feel…), Ik ben… (I am…), Ik word… (I am becoming/getting…). For example: Ik voel me verdrietig (I feel sad), Ik ben boos op jou (I am angry at you), Ik word nerveus van die situatie (That situation makes me nervous). The verb voelen (to feel) is used with me for emotional states.
More nuanced emotions: aangeslagen (shaken/down), opgelucht (relieved), overweldigd (overwhelmed), dankbaar (grateful), nieuwsgierig (curious), enthousiast (enthusiastic), pessimistisch (pessimistic), optimistisch (optimistic), ambivalent (ambivalent), nostalgisch (nostalgic). Dutch has several untranslatable words for emotional states, such as gezellig (cozy warmth with others) and nuchter (level-headed, down-to-earth).
