The NT2 Exam: What It Is and How to Prepare

NT2 stands for Nederlands als Tweede Taal (Dutch as a Second Language). It is the official Dutch language qualification system for non-native speakers. There are two programmes: Programma I (for lower-education contexts) and Programma II (for higher education and professional contexts). The exams test four skills: lezen (reading), luisteren (listening), schrijven (writing), and spreken (speaking). Each skill is tested and graded separately.

NT2 Programma II is required for university admission, professional teaching qualifications, and some civil service positions. The exam is at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Programma I is at roughly B1 level. The Staatsexamen NT2 (state exam for Dutch as a second language) is administered by DUO (Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs). Exam dates are available throughout the year at regional examination centres.

Preparation resources: Taalcafe and community language classes run by municipalities, official practice exams from DUO’s website (examenbladen — past exam papers with model answers), NT2-certificaat preparation courses from commercial providers, and the Stichting Lezen en Schrijven for literacy support. For self-study: Nederland in Zicht (textbook series for NT2), OefenenVoorNT2.nl (online practice platform), and Dutch language learning apps set to B1/B2 content. The key preparation strategy: practise under timed exam conditions using real past papers.
