Dutch prepositions of place (plaatsbepalingen) do not always translate one-to-one with English. In (in/inside): in de kamer (in the room), in het water (in the water), in Amsterdam (in Amsterdam — cities take in). Op (on/at): op de tafel (on the table), op de vloer (on the floor), op het werk (at work), op school (at school), op straat (on the street). Op is used where English would say at for many locations: op het station (at the station), op de universiteit (at university).
Aan (at/on — for surfaces, edges, waterways): aan de muur (on the wall — attached), aan het water (on/by the water), aan de beurt zijn (to be next in line), aan tafel zitten (to be sitting at the table). Bij (at/near/with): bij de dokter (at the doctor’s), bij vrienden (at friends’ place), bij de ingang (near the entrance), bij mij thuis (at my place). Voor (in front of/before): voor het huis (in front of the house), voor de klas staan (to stand in front of the class).
Achter (behind/at the back): achter de deur (behind the door), achter de computer zitten (to sit at/behind the computer). Naast (next to/beside): naast de bank (next to the sofa). Tussen (between): tussen de twee gebouwen (between the two buildings). Boven (above/upstairs): boven de winkel wonen (to live above the shop). Onder (under/below/downstairs): onder de brug (under the bridge). Tegenover (opposite): tegenover het station (opposite the station). These prepositions require memorisation with specific location types.
